The Pazyryk Chieftan ice mummy was not just adorned with many tattoos, he also ended up providing key evidence for how the Pazyryk people created them.
A seemingly insignificant find of a ram-shaped felt cutout in the Chieftan's tomb was later dtermined to be a perfect match to a ram tattoo on his right arm. From this, scientists extrapolated that the cutout would have been used like a stencil after dying the felt and applying it to the skin, where it would leave a design that could be used as a guide for the tattoo artist to follow.
